Recognising swimming as a valuable skill to pass onto young children, one childcare provider aimed to boost mums' abilities. Jo Stephenson discovers how mums were persuaded into the water, enhancing their self-esteem in the process.

Objectives: Swimming is a valuable life skill and can be a fun andhealthy activity for parents and children to enjoy together. FootprintsCreche, a mobile childcare service that covers the Kerrier district ofCornwall, organised a course of swimming lessons aimed at mums who wereeither non-swimmers or lacked confidence in the water. The aim was toboost their confidence and self-esteem so they could teach theirchildren to swim as well as get used to using childcare.

What was done: The creche worked with the Penventon Hotel in Redruth,which has a private swimming pool, and in partnership with the CornwallSports Partnership, which supplied a swimming coach.
