Play: Big Lottery hands out biggest awards

The Big Lottery Fund this week made its biggest ever award for children's play projects, with five councils getting more than 1m each.

In total 88 local authorities received a share of the 34m handedout in the latest round of Children's Play Awards. The biggest awardswent to: Leeds City Council; Liverpool City Council; Manchester CityCouncil; Bradford Metropolitan District Council; and Sheffield CityCouncil.

Leeds, which got the largest award of 1.6m, will be using itsgrant to refurbish eight playgrounds, as well as provide outreachservices. Frank O'Malley, business coordinator at Leeds Council, saidplay teams will be working in public spaces with little play provisionwith a focus on old-fashioned activities such as den-building andsupervised campfires. He said: "We want to demonstrate that play doesn'thave to all be about swings and roundabouts."
