Plan to get young people out of debt

Youth Work
Young people in North Tyneside are to learn how to budget and avoid racking up debts through a one-day conference.

The My Cash conference is aimed at 15 and 16-year-olds and has been organised by North Tyneside Council.

The council decided to hold the day of tips after a recent government poll of 4,000 young people revealed that nine out of 10 were in debt by the time they turn 21. Almost half of the 18- to 24-year-olds surveyed owed more than £2,000 and one in five owed in excess of £10,000.

Labour councillor Norma Redfearn, North Tyneside's lead member for children, young people and learning, said: "By educating pupils in a fun and interactive way on the serious subject of financial management, and by encouraging economic and social responsibility, these later life problems may be avoided."
