In a survey by the charity The Children's Society, 22 per cent of 17- to 19-year-olds confessed to not being able to find a job because of the downturn in the economy. Seven per cent of 11- to 16-year-olds also said their mother or father had recently lost their jobs.
The research suggests that children are bearing the brunt of the current economic climate, which is leading to cancelled family holidays, cuts in pocket money and missed school trips.
Bob Reitemeier, chief executive of The Children's Society, said: ''This is simply unacceptable and we all must make a concerted push to end child poverty. If anything the recession makes it even more important to do this because if we fail children now we are going to, as a society, suffer the consequences for generations to come.''
