There are now 743,000 unemployed 18- to 24-year-olds and 203,000 unemployed 16- and 17-year-olds. This brings the total number of unemployed 16- to 14-year-olds to 946,000.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), said young people are bearing the brunt of the recession.
"This is a crisis for our young people. Prolonged periods of joblessness permanently damage careers and without continued government investment we risk losing this generation, who are vital to our future labour market performance," he said.
