Taking a youth group to a thriving and exciting city needn't involve airports and extortionate prices - a bargain break in Edinburgh is a few hours away.
One of the biggest draws is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival (3-25 August 2008), which last year included 31,000 performances at 250 venues across the city. The Hogmanay Festival (29 December to 1 January) is also a big pull for celebrating the New Year in style.
Edinburgh has a wealth of art galleries including The National Gallery Complex and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (both 0131 624 6200).
It would be foolish not to go to Edinburgh Castle (0131 225 9846). Open seven days a week, prices begin at £5.50. If this is a little too sedate for your group, try nearby Livingston and spend a day at Racing Karts' indoor circuit (01506 410 123 or www.racingkarts.co.uk).
