Pilot to be model for volunteering

1 min read

In the youth green paper, the Government revealed it had extended its pilot Young Volunteer Challenge, a programme for disadvantaged 17- and 18-year-olds that was due to end in September 2005, until March 2006.

The project provides young people with a placement and pays them 45 a week. After volunteering for nine months they receive a 750 bonus.

The extension should allow the independent charity the Government is setting up to oversee the Russell Commission's recommendations to use the model. Ian Russell will be involved in the charity.

The Government also wants to expand opportunities for peer mentoring and backs the Russell Commission's suggestion that a national youth volunteering award should be created.
