2 mins read

Young Volunteer Challenge - this must be significant for v? Yes, the Young Volunteer Challenge is very much in the territory of the new body implementing the Russell Commission recommendations, and v's planners should take notice. The volunteer challenge pilot ran from May 2003 to March 2006 and was an attempt to support the uptake of full-time volunteering opportunities by 18- and 19-year-olds from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Participants committed to a nine-month full-time placement during which they received an allowance of 45 a week and could pick up a completion award of up to 750.

What impact did it have? It wasn't possible to run a control group study, but we can say some useful things - not least that it showed it is a viable option. Young people overwhelmingly thought it a great scheme, with 92 per cent saying they would do it again and 95 per cent would recommend it to friends.
