
In the morning, there was a sense of the surreal as the Lord Mayor's Jaguar and three other cars turned up in front of my house. We then proceeded to meet some visiting Rotarians from Australia, the first of the day's engagements.
Throughout the day, among other things, I had lunch with Canterbury's Lady Mayoress, collected money for guide dogs, tried on the mayoral robes and enjoyed a tour of the council offices.
My personal highlights, however, were viewing the CCTV control room for the district and visiting the Guildhall (the city council chamber).
The day was a unique mix of the traditional and honorific roles of the Lord Mayor and the very real and modern problems of running the city.
