
I had just 30 minutes to blow dry and set my model Janik's hair. During my interview with the Hairdressing Council adjudicators I didn't even feel particularly nervous.
Finally, it was over to Salon International for the awards. We stood individually in front of about 200 people to introduce ourselves. There was an annoyingly long pause when the winner was announced.
"The winner of the L'Oreal UK student Hairdresser of the year is ... Mathilde Heather." I hugged Janik and could see some of my work buddies crying. My boss Gary looked stunned.
My award included a trophy, three courses and a trip to the House of Commons for tea.
