For the first time the games, now in their 19th year, included a competition for young reporters. Competitors, all under 18, were given a story brief on a subject rarely covered in the press and researched it in mentored groups. "Front page" news items were then written and gold, silver and bronze medallists chosen. The competition was supported by Manchester City Football Club and the Manchester Evening News.
The event marked a stage in the games' evolution beyond its sporting base. In 2006 competitive arts events were included for the first time and this year's games has continued the trend. Competitors vied for medals in dance, flag display, cheerleading and the visual arts. A battle of the bands event was also held.
