
A local Lib Dem councillor in West Berkshire has hit out at the Conservative-led council for shutting 13 youth clubs and leaving young people "hanging around on street corners", according to the Newbury and Thatcham Chronicle. Alan Macro said the closures were “needless” because the administration went on to stash £700,000 in council coffers at the end of 2011/12.
Nurseries in Scotland are facing tough times with rising utility bills, wages and business rates, combined with parents reducing childcare hours, a survey by The National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) has found. The survey found nearly half of nurseries in Scotland do not expect to make a profit this year and 86 per cent have seen an increase in part-time children. NDNA is calling on government and local authorities to provide families with access to affordable childcare.
