Postcode lottery for volunteering opportunities; prevalence of sexting highlighted; and Nottinghamshire Council outlines plans to cut children's services, all in the news today.

Young people who live outside of major cities in the UK have less access to volunteering opportunities than those in inner city areas, research had found. A report by Generation Change found there is a “postcode lottery” in terms of social action opportunities. London was found to be the UK’s key social action hotspot, followed by Birmingham, Cardiff and Coventry.

A quarter of young people have sent a sexual image or video to somebody else, a study has found. A survey by ChildLine found that 40 per cent of 13- to 18-year-olds questioned said they had created an image or video of themselves, with around 25 per cent sending saying they'd sent such images to someone else with their mobile phone or computer.

Children’s services are set to take the biggest hit as Nottinghamshire County Council cuts £83m across the authority. The Nottingham Post reports that the department has been earmarked for £24m of cuts for the next financial year (2014/15).

The children’s services department in Knowsley has a new boss after Paul Boyce was named director of people services for the council. The role brings together education, adult and children's social care.

I CAN, the children’s communication charity, has launched a new activity book for year 6 pupils to support their transition into secondary school. The Moving On! student activity pack can be used with all children, including those with poor language skills and speech, language and communication needs. There is also a teacher guide to support whole class or small group activities.

And finally, a partnership of organisations in Warrington has won a €45,000 grant for a youth project to run jointly with Warrington’s twin town in Germany. The multi-media project will see schools and youth groups in Warrington and in Hilden, North Rhine-Westphalia, make short films about local places of historical or cultural significance.
