Education: Mencap condemns School Games ban

1 min read Education
Disability charity Mencap is urging the government to overturn a ruling that prevents children with a learning disability from entering the UK School Games.

The games are run according to Olympic and Paralympic principles. Adult athletes with a learning disability are currently excluded from the Paralympic Games after several falsely claimed to have a learning disability at the games in Sydney. That ruling has caused a knock-on effect, preventing children with a learning disability taking part in the UK School Games.

Mencap chief executive Jo Williams said children with learning disabilities did not qualify for the Paralympic section of the UK School Games, but are not able to compete on equal terms with non-disabled athletes. She said: "It is inexcusable that children with a learning disability are being discriminated against because of the Paralympic ruling for adults. We are seeking the removal of the ban on athletes with a learning disability from the Paralympics and we urge the government to find a solution so that children with a learning disability have the chance to compete in next year's UK School Games."
