Participation: Young people in regeneration plans

Teenagers from disadvantaged areas will advise the Government and community organisations on how to involve young people in local decisions.

The 15- to 20-year-olds from four areas were chosen for the pilot, runby the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit in the Office of the Deputy PrimeMinister.

The young advisers, from New Deal for Communities (NDC) regenerationschemes in East Brighton, Beswick and Openshaw, West Middlesbrough andHull, will show organisations how to involve young people, what toconsider when planning facilities, and act as champions to show whatyoung people can contribute.

The advisers will be paid 8 an hour, given training and possiblyformal qualifications. The pilot is linked to the Department forEducation and Skills' Learning to Listen initiative.

Annmarie Edwards, aged 18, who will be an adviser at Hull's NDC Project'said: "It's an eye-opener to hear about other NDCs' experiences and howto engage with young people better."
