In the six-month pilot, which runs until March, between four and six 15- to 20- year-olds in each area will be paid 8 an hour to advise community leaders and councillors on the best ways of involving young people in decision-making and planning for their needs.
The pilot has been launched and funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Neighbourhood Renewal Unit. Training is being provided by the department's training unit Renewal Academy.
The pilot is being run by New Deal for Communities partnerships in East Brighton, East Manchester, West Middlesbrough and Hull.
In East Brighton, the pilot is being run by Youth for the Future, a project funded by eb4u, the organisation responsible for running the area's New Deal for Communities regeneration programme. The six young advisers are being given digital video recorders to create video diaries.
