Brighton-based youth organisation the Crew Club has secured 1m of New Deal for Communities funding to build a youth centre on the deprived Whitehawk Estate, in the east of the city.
The building will have space for activities, an education room, IT facilities, and various multi-use spaces. It will also have a grass-covered roof to blend in with the hill it is soon to be sited on.
The Crew Club has about 500 members. Darren Snow, manager of the project, says that the aim is to improve services rather than expand on membership numbers. There are also plans for the voluntary sector group to work with a local statutory youth centre.
Construction is due to start by early July, and the centre should open in January 2007. Funding was provided through east Brighton regeneration organisation, eb4U.
