Participation: Community scheme to develop young leaders

1 min read
ICA:UK is looking for voluntary organisations in London and Manchester to be partners in a programme to train young people as community leaders.

The charity, set up to bring about a "humane and sustainable future", is using a 40,000 grant from youth volunteering charity v to develop a Young Community Leaders project.

The project is due to start in March in Manchester and London. ICA:UK will work with a voluntary youth organisation to recruit 20 young people in each city. They will be trained and supported by the charity's staff for 12 weekly sessions in the planning and delivery of community projects. The participating voluntary organisations will recruit the young people and host the sessions.

At the end of the three-month training, the young people will work as a team to deliver a project designed to meet needs in their community.

Martin Gilbraith, director of UK programmes at ICA:UK, said the charity was particularly keen to empower vulnerable young people. He said: "We're looking to give them the opportunity to demonstrate that they can be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem, which they are often perceived to be."

The charity aims to train one group of young people in each city over each of the next two years. Interested organisations should contact amelia@ ica-uk.org.uk.

Separately, v is recruiting 16- to 25-year-olds to replace 20 young people who make up its youth advisory board, v20. The panel meets every six weeks to discuss youth issues.
