Participation: Beacon Council winners will publicise youth engagement

One of the 10 themes was "positive youth engagement", and the councils will get a share of a 3m fund, divided between all 61 round seven winners.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister has awarded more beacons in round seven than any previous round. Six winners in the youth engagement category were expected, but the judges felt the standard was high enough to choose more.

Tom Wylie, chief executive of The National Youth Agency, was a specialist judge for the category. "It is good news that authorities are making progress in enabling young people's future participation in the democratic process," he said. "This will position the services well for the Youth Opportunity Fund."
