Awards: Beacon authorities announced soon

1 min read

The 11 authorities have been selected for the ways they have involved young people in community and democratic processes. Site visits will start next week.

The short list is: City of Bradford, City of Wakefield, Derwentside District, Gateshead, Lancashire, London Borough of Lewisham, South Norfolk, Welwyn Hatfield, West Sussex, Wirral and Wolverhampton City.

The National Youth Agency chief executive Tom Wylie, specialist assessor for youth engagement on the Beacon Scheme's independent advisory panel, expects about six authorities to be awarded Beacon status. In exchange, they will be expected to share their expertise with others.

Examples of this in Gateshead include the establishment of five neighbourhood youth forums to shape the planning process and a young person's gym.
