The National Youth Agency: Comment - Light more beacons

1 min read

Effective authorities embed such work: they use it across a number of their services that affect the young; many adopt The NYA/Local Government Association Hear by Right tool as a way of thinking and mapping their work.

As a result of such actions they can point to how local services are being reshaped and better outcomes achieved. They have moved from consultation to participation and from process to results. This will stand them in good stead as the new Youth Opportunity Fund rolls out.

What is a surprise is that relatively few local authority youth services took the opportunity to bid for Beacon status. Some of us have to spend too much time explaining why there is bad practice in some places; we could all do with a little of the limelight that external recognition can bring. That applies nationally and locally. So, let us hope for a strong commitment to put forward the best of youth work - in all its forms and settings - for the new YPN Young People's Services Awards and for the Challenge Fund the Chancellor announced in his Budget.
