Outdoor pursuits: Winter adventures

Outdoor activity centres provide a range of courses when the weather turns cold. Caspar van Vark looks at what's on offer.

Unsurprisingly, you're more likely to find winter activities the further north you go, and Scotland has various organisations offering them. One is Outward Bound, which has a centre at Fort William. It has long provided winter activities, but now it's about to launch a programme specifically aimed at groups of young people. Activities will include hill walking, learning to use equipment such as crampons and even spending the night out in the snow.

Tony Shepherd, director of the centre, says it's not essential for young people doing this kind of thing to have previous experience, but most will have done some summer activities before - typically an Outward Bound course.
