There are many options for youth groups planning a break at an outdoor education centre, Caspar van Vark looks at four of them.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

Brathay calls itself a "people development" organisation. It focuses not just on having a good time, but also on setting clear objectives for personal achievement. Rather than offering a set menu of activities, it aims to design courses for young people based on their own goals.

Programmes typically involve outdoor activities but also creative work, multimedia projects and drama. A recent group from Doncaster had its programme designed around developing skills for enterprise (see box, p17). To get the most out of the week, Brathay consults groups and their leaders beforehand - and that can even include a representative visiting the group.
