Outdoor activities: Achievement through Adventure

7 mins read
Young people can get a lot out of outdoor activities but how can their achievements be usefully accredited? Caspar van Vark looks at some successful schemes.

Outlook Expeditions has been working with a group of 17- to 21-year-olds from the Anglesey estates for a year. "Two or three were on the road to jail," says Davies. "The rest didn't have jobs and were running around setting fire to cars. We have taken them out of their community on to an adventure programme - we call it taking a helicopter approach, and looking down on their problems from the outside."

The group has taken part in team-building and personal-development activities including winter sports in Scotland. "They now all have jobs," says Davies. "Not brilliant jobs, but at least jobs." The young people have also, with the help of Outlook Expeditions, raised 120,000 for their own community centre through applying for funds.
