Winter activities: A winter wonderland

Summer's over but it doesn't mean young people should stay inside. John Newman takes a look at what outdoor activities are on offer during winter in the UK and abroad.

But youth workers should not assume that the world of winter sport is closed to the young people in their charge, including the most disadvantaged.

There are organisations and groups that are experienced at leading winter activities. They provide a range of outdoor programmes such as hill walking, climbing, kayaking, skiing and snowboarding that set challenges many young people have never tried before.

New experiences

This is the idea behind Snow-Camp, a charity set up last year to provide children and young people with the chance to experience mountain sport in the French Alps. The group of people who set up Snow-Camp had a great deal of work to complete before they could get young people to the slopes.
