The Youth Hostels Association, which runs the scheme, has a contract to provide 21,000 places on the programme over two years (YPN, 20-26 April, p13).
It is aiming for 10,500 places this year and has already filled more than 6,000 of these.
The association is working with other organisations to run 23 camps across England and Wales, offering various activities.
Ben Rossi, promotions manager at Do it 4 Real, said that some activities were more popular than others. "We've sold out of places for water sports," he said. Camps focusing on one sport, such as the rugby events being run with the Sale Sharks team, are also selling well.
