A company called Lynch Wines has homed in on exactly these problems, and has plans to exacerbate them. A spokesperson said: "Many young people go to clubs and bars to meet people with a view to having sex - we are just helping them on their way."

Why did he say this? Because his company is promoting a vodka-based drink in a bottle, sweetly and fruitily flavoured. It is like the familiar alcopops. But with an added twist, in that it contains what its publicity calls a "sensational scientifically blended concoction of potent and proven aphrodisiacs".

The drink could, the company says, lead to "a generation of randy super-beings".
