OPINION: The Ferret ... digs behind the headlines

Hiring private investigators to watch their teenage sons and daughters is one of the more desperate steps. An article in The Independent provided the lowdown on this dismal habit. It also showed that the clowns that provide the service are as devoid of common sense as the parents who pay for it.

It tells the story of a parent wondering where his 14-year-old daughter gets alcohol and cigarettes. To shed light, he hires a private eye, who decides to send decoy teenage shoppers into neighbourhood off-licences.

Anyone who sells them forbidden goods will be added to a list of unscrupulous retailers. The trouble is, he doesn't have any 14-year-old employees.
