It must have been drawn to someone's attention that teenagers sometimes mix alcohol with soft drinks. This left the constabulary with a problem.

As PC Helen Tildesley of Bury police told The Big Issue: "How can you tell if there is alcohol in a soft drink bottle? Do you smell it? Or taste it? That's not very professional, is it?"

No, indeedy ... The idea of Bury police stopping young people and saying, "hey, gizza swig of your pop" does not bear thinking about.

So they are pioneering test strips. When the papers are inserted into liquid they turn blue if alcohol is present. Sorted.
