Teachers need to know and understand why and when pupils give valid (orinvalid) excuses to skip lessons, school or detentions and punishments.Sometimes young carers don't want people to know about their situationsat home and teachers need to be aware of how to deal with these youngpeople. Supportive teachers can be more flexible with homework andcoursework deadlines and not leave young carers feeling embarrassed.
There are young carers in every school and one teacher who understandsmakes can make a huge difference. I would also encourage schools to setup young carer drop-in groups, which provide support and help for youngpeople.
I would also encourage young carers to go into teacher training collegesand give talks. I would send leaflets and brochures about young carersto schools because many teachers don't know about them. I would alsooffer schools the chance to send teachers to the Young Carers Festivalso they can meet young carers from around the country so that they canlearn about how to help young carers.
