... getting young people involved

Tim Strange, 17, Horsham, West Sussex

As St John Ambulance's National Cadet of the Year, I will be encouraging cadets to get more involved with local projects and I am determined to increase our membership. Young people are often labelled as yobs or hoodies and considered a nuisance. We give them the chance to put something back into the community - and we do this without any government funding.

Most people think St John Ambulance just teaches first aid and provides event cover but we serve the community in many ways. The dedicated ambulance crews of our patient transport service take people to hospitals, clinics and care homes throughout the UK. In Sussex we have teams of nurse-led volunteers who provide care to homeless people.
