OPINION: Hot Issue - Is the problem of street crime inherentlylinked to drugs?

3 mins read

YES - Detective inspector Dave Powell, South Yorkshire Police

We can't get away from the fact that street crime is directly linked to drug abuse. I am responsible for investigating serious and series robberies in South Yorkshire and I deal with this problem day to day.

The people I see say to me that they did it because they were either high on drugs or that they needed to buy some drugs. The perception that these people travel away from where they live because they don't want to be recognised is also false. Our research shows that most offenders commit offences within one or two miles of their address.
