The removal of the standard Department for Education and Skills (DfES) fund for school drugs advisers at the end of March will have serious implications for drug education in schools, and more widely for the health and wellbeing of young people. It is likely that a number of these adviser posts in local education authorities will be lost.
The advisers represent a source of considerable skill and experience in the drugs field. Many posts cover the work of the National Healthy Schools Initiative and the new DfES guidance on drug education in schools, which is due to be published this month. Trained and qualified drugs advisers have a key role in the implementation of these.
