Connexions was established with a bold claim that it would be the panacea for most young people's needs and the service to co-ordinate all other providers, bringing together a seamless approach to service delivery.
The reality is that the service has been a patchy and costly addition to the youth provision field. In some places it works well, in others it has tried to colonise other fields of work and created more problems than solutions.
While continuing in most areas to provide careers advice and information, it has not matched young people's needs. But it has been successful in one area: recruiting workers from other hard-pressed professions.
