Opinion: Hot issue - Does the fear of being sued make it hard torecruit staff?

There is a growing body of evidence to suggest some people are being put off volunteering for fear of being sued should something go wrong. A recent survey carried out by Volunteering England as part of its Volunteering and Risk project found that a quarter of individuals worried about risk when deciding whether to volunteer and one in 20 had considered stopping.

Organisations reported that they too were worried about risk - more than 90 per cent felt the UK was living in a compensation culture and some had reacted by stopping certain types of voluntary activity.
