Opinion: Hot Issue - Does a fear of risk stifle youth volunteering?

1 min read

YES - KAREN BRUSH, managing director, Institute for Outdoor Learning, and voluntary youth leader

Personally for me it hasn't, and I do quite a lot of youth volunteering. However, certainly among parents who are working with our youth group there is a reluctance to take part, mainly to do with the culture of blame. It is not to do with confidence, but more to do with concerns that if something does go wrong there will be a claim. If you are a professional who works in the outdoors you tend to be a little less worried about it.

YES - JUSTIN DAVIS-SMITH, deputy chief executive, Volunteering England
