The world is a very competitive place now. In countries such as the US, Australia, Japan and China, young people are heavily encouraged to be competitive in everything they do - especially in school and in sports.

Competition can be very good for your development, and can be fun as well.

To become National Cadet of the Year - which is like an ambassador for St John Ambulance Cadets - you have to take part in competitions at county and national level. These competitions, based around team, presentation and interview skills, really pushed the cadets taking part and the social side was great. Competitions need to be fun and allow you to gain new skills, although it's often the training and preparation beforehand that gives you such a buzz as well.
