Opinion: Hot Issue - Do we really need yet another volunteeringorganisation?

2 mins read

NO - Kim Brunel-Osman, communications co-ordinator, Student Volunteering England

We were pleased with the inclusion of volunteering in the Budget and the announcement that a commission is to be established to report to the Government on the way forward for a national youth volunteering strategy.

We hope any new national strategy would incorporate existing successful initiatives, such as Student Volunteering England, Millennium Volunteers and other organisations such as YouthNet UK and TimeBank. These already do an incredible amount of work involving young people and volunteering.

We are concerned, however, about a new national strategy or resulting organisation being superimposed over the existing student volunteering infrastructure. One of the great things about student volunteering is its creativity and flexibility. We therefore hope the commission keeps in mind the nature of volunteering and those things that it embodies and that make it a truly valuable activity for both the community and the young person: freedom, choice and empowerment.
