Opinion: Hot Issue - Do young people have enough summer schemes?

1 min read

YES - JOHN APPLETON, principal youth officer, Cornwall Youth Service

There are a large number of summer activities provided for young people in the county. There are a variety of types provided by a variety of providers, but there is a lack of co-ordination between the different providers and different funding streams. As a result, schemes often don't end up in the right places for the right young people. We're trying to achieve a more coherent service.

NO - CAROL STONE, head of youth service, Calderdale Council

There needs to be a wider range of provision for young people. There is a wide range available through Positive Activities for Young People but it's not universal and there are some who don't fall into the target group. You have the young people whose parents pay for them and there are those who fall into the target group, but there are others in between. Summer schemes are an opportunity for young people to learn and use their leisure time constructively.
