Opinion: Hot Issue - Do young people bother to read magazines thesedays?

3 mins read

YES - Matty Cartwright, 16, member of V20 youth engagement team, Russell Commission

Yes, they do all the time. I read everything I can get my hands on - women's magazines, music magazines, magazines in the paper. Young people are interested in magazines because they can read them in their leisure time and they get a lot of information out of them. Magazines are a good way of reaching young people. A lot of people give out flyers to young people but they never keep them, whereas if they're in a magazine people use them more.

Sometimes the adverts in the back or the agony aunts are seen as a joke but young people do read them. It's better to read a magazine that has been written by young people for young people because older media professionals don't always know what's going on and can get it wrong. If a young person writes a magazine, you know they probably know what's going on.
