I note that some of your Hot Issue contributors prescribe the provision of more activities for young people as a solution to gang and knife violence (YPN, 28 March-3 April, p12). But is this adequate either as a diagnosis of, or a prescription for, the problem of violent youth crime?

Within two miles of the recent murder scene in Hammersmith Grove, there are two parks with football pitches, tennis and basketball courts, along with many organised sporting activities. There are three public swimming pools, all of which provide group and individual swimming activities, and an excellent sports centre with many indoor tennis courts, football pitches and a climbing wall.
