"There is someone here to see Margaret." But Margaret isn't here anymore.
At least that's what we shall be saying from April to all those young people whose needs have been best met by Margaret's youth work knowledge.
I have had to make her redundant after 11 years working for the Corner House Youth Project, because what Margaret does doesn't fit any boxes within the outcome-target-measurable frameworks that the few remaining voluntary and community sector funders demand.
This doesn't mean her work is any less outcome-focused than those of her counterparts who will be funded; it just means the outcomes are too soft. Her outcomes are those that are embedded in good youth practice and are too small to make a difference to targets and frameworks, but make an enormous difference to an individual young person.
