While I was pleased to see the article about schools-based youth work (YPN, 14-20 February, p14), I was somewhat surprised not to see any mention of the youth work done in schools by voluntary organisations and in particular by faith-based organisations during the last 20 to 30 years.
Many such organisations have been undertaking both informal and formal youth work in secondary schools up and down the country. Some schools have even appointed such workers to be mentors to the young people in these schools.
Organisations such as Schools Outreach and Oxford Youth Works pioneered such involvement back in the 1980s and have an established reputation in this field.
