Like many other youth service providers, Gateshead has seen a growth and commitment to working with young people who find or place themselves outside of local provision (YPN, 14-20 February, p9). "Hanging about" has, for some, become the norm.
This does not, however, change the fact that the relationship between youth workers and young people, no matter what the setting, is voluntary and sustaining their involvement and interest relies on engagement through a variety of methods at different times and in a variety of settings.
Some young people are harder to engage than others and some methods of engagement are more difficult to deliver because of the locations where young people choose to hang out, or because of specific area issues.
