The recent Institute for Public Policy Research report on out-of-control teenagers comes complete with a novel twist (YPN, 25-31 October, p5). It seems we adults love a good moan about the hoodie terrors who stalk our streets but invariably turn a blind eye when teenagers are up to their anti-social tricks. Meanwhile, the gulf between the ages widens.
Does it have to be this way? We recently evaluated a Doncaster-based project designed to equip young learners with the knowledge, understanding, skills and the personal qualities essential to employability and citizenship.
Our research found marked improvements in maturity, confidence, attitude and motivation among learners, most of whom had been excluded from school. "We had no trouble getting him out of bed, not like school," said one parent.
