RURAL DIVERSITY

I read in CYP Now (24-30 October) that according to Jan Bridget, manager of Galyic, homophobic bullying is "particularly difficult for schoolchildren in rural areas as people there tend to be quite backward".

Twenty million people live in rural communities: a fifth of the population of England and Wales. Indeed it is quite possible that some CYP Now readers live in rural areas, including lesbian, gay and bisexual people.

It is clear that the speaker has neither respect, nor any awareness of, the diversity of rural communities. Despite the challenges of poor transport and declining public services, a range of social and support services exist in rural areas.
