An art project in Kent is helping young people at risk of going to prison find a new way to express themselves.

Funding £11,000 from charity Unitas
Aim To encourage young people to find new ways of expressing themselves.

Ten young people at risk of going to prison have been taking part in a three-week Summer Arts College in Kent to try to get their lives back on track.

They recently completed the intensive course at the New House Youth Centre, in Sittingbourne, where they were taught a combination of art, literacy and numeracy skills that aimed to get them back into education, training or employment.

The young people were challenged to look at their own identity and find new ways of expressing themselves. They painted self-portraits, learned photography skills and produced a short film, for which they scripted, directed and wrote the music. Some of the artwork will now be entered into the Koestler Trust Arts by Offenders award.
