Volunteering charity Community Service Volunteers (CSV) asked more than 600 people if the time they gave up for others made a difference to their health.
Six out of 10 young people aged 18 to 24 said volunteering had improved their fitness and one in three said it had helped them to lose weight.
About one in five young volunteers said they drank less alcohol and one in three of those that smoked said giving up their time had led them to cut down on cigarettes.
The survey, conducted by research firm ICM, was launched to coincide with CSV's campaign to promote its volunteering event Make A Difference Day on 30 October.
