In a survey of 750 toy buyers, the research company found that less than a third of young people spent more time playing with each other than on their own, with more than a quarter spending most of their free time watching television or playing computer games. Just 36 per cent of adults regulate how much television their children watch.
Television viewing is highest in Yorkshire and the Northeast, swallowing up the free time of 38 per cent of young people.
It is lowest, at 17 per cent, in Scotland, where more than half of young people are encouraged into the fresh air by their parents, compared with only 41 per cent of young people in London.
