The medical case for urgent action on obesity was made last week at the launch of a report, Storing up Problems, produced by a working group of health bodies.
This issues a challenge to the Government to tackle obesity with a joined-up approach, involving education, health, agriculture and other departments.
Statistics from market research firm Mintel in its recent report, Attitudes Towards Healthy Eating in the UK, suggest that a quarter of teenagers actively avoid fats in their diet, while 17 per cent avoid sugar.
Mintel consumer analyst Jenny Catlin said: "Younger people want to see fast results and are more likely to binge diet." Nearly half of the 15- to 19-year-olds questioned for the report felt they could do more.
